It all started with the board game
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, the first RPG of this size from the acclaimed Polish studio Questline. The setting is a fallen world inspired by Arthurian legend and therefore rooted in Celtic and Christian mythology, but also filled with magic and powerful supernatural entities.
The game offers first- and third-person perspectives, focusing on combat, dungeon exploration, and making difficult choices. It is a kind of love letter to older productions in the Elder Scrolls series, among others.
The plot
The game captivates with its atmosphere and gameplay. The action is set in a dark world on the brink of catastrophe, a cyclical phenomenon related to King Arthur, which we initially know little about.
An Arthurian legend with a sordid twist may not sound particularly thrilling, but the filmmakers have managed to bring all the elements together into a coherent and compelling whole. Players are eager to unravel the mysteries of this world, but nothing is handed to them on a plate — they must piece together the scattered fragments of information, separating the grains of truth from the legends, myths, rumours and outright lies.
The script is impressive
In this respect, Tainted Grail is probably closest to Elden Ring. At times, you can feel as if you are exploring Pogrobno just before the madness consumes everyone. There are still people to talk to here, and the dialogue is interesting. It avoids pathos and triviality, sounding quite natural and being well acted.
Often, we feel that we are not hearing the whole truth; our interlocutors are constantly twisting, flailing and manipulating in an attempt to push their own agendas. The scriptwriters deserve praise because Avalon and its inhabitants are so compelling that you want to get to know them. It’s just a pity that there was a lack of Polish dubbing in what is, after all, a Polish game.
The world is large and creatively designed
The map is divided into three fairly large regions, and so far I’ve only explored a small part of it. Initially, the locations strongly resemble the aforementioned Pogrobno, but the deeper you go into the forest, the more the artists let their imaginations run wild and the more bizarre places you will visit. Sometimes they even hint at the atmospheres of H. R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński; at other times, they enchant us with idyllic beauty and magical, flowery landscapes native to the Eastern Borderlands.
We will also often visit areas completely detached from the main map, such as someone’s dreams, where you can really see the passion and creativity of the creators. One moment we may be exploring a castle straight out of a vampire novel; the next, we could be running around a world sketched on a white sheet of paper. There are quite a few such moments.
Elden Ring-inspired combat system
The game strongly resembles Daggerfall or Morrowind, but with an Elden Ring-inspired combat system and balance. To tell the truth, it’s the perfect combination that I’ve been looking for in vain for a long time.
On the one hand, there’s the immersive flexibility of The Elder Scrolls; on the other, the pace, dynamics and challenge of Souls. You can also pause and save the game at any time, change the difficulty level to ‘trivially easy’ or ‘unhealthy extreme’, and after death, you don’t respawn at a bonfire.
In conclusion, it’s worth giving this title a chance!
These days, a fascinating world, a heavier atmosphere, a focus on challenging gameplay and a multitude of often ingenious dungeons to clear are a luxury commodity, despite appearances. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon prioritises planning and thinking. During quests, you must discover, connect and interpret facts. You can get lost and fail, but with a guide open on your phone, it’s not a frustrating experience. You can sense the spirit of Daggerfall and Morrowind here; you can sense Elden Ring here. But most of all, you can sense the passion and ingenuity of the developers.
