Gothic is a remake of the 2001 role-playing game of the same name. While the original was the work of the German studio Piranha Bytes, the described game was developed by the Spanish team Barcelona Studio, created by THQ Nordic, which owns the rights to the brand as of May 2019 and also owns the Piranha Bytes team. The plot of the game

Gothic takes place in the fantastic kingdom of Myrtana, whose ruler – Rhobar II – has established a penal colony on the island of Khorinis. The convicts sent there have to work hard in the Mining Valley, mining ore. To prevent the prisoners from escaping, the mages created a barrier that was only permeable from the outside. But the spell got out of hand, and eventually the dome surrounded the entire area of the Mining Valley, trapping the prisoners, the guards who guarded them, and the wizards themselves…. and the evil that lurks in the land. Meanwhile, players take on the role of a nameless prisoner who has just arrived in the colony and soon finds himself destined for far greater deeds than working in the mine.

Game mechanics

In Gothic, the action is seen from a third-person perspective (TPP). The authors have provided us with a not too large open world, in which we will find, among other things, camps set up by ore miners, mines, an orc village and numerous ruins. The story is told in a non-linear fashion – the player can decide which faction to join, which affects the course of the plot. In addition to the story-driven quests, there are several side missions to complete.

The game world is not a safe place, and in addition to hostile convicts, monsters pose a threat. Initially, you’ll be up against the local fauna (such as wolves, giant beetles and stubbleworms), but as you progress you’ll come up against more formidable foes (such as skeletons, orcs and demons). Fights are dynamic, and we can use both melee weapons (one-handed and two-handed swords, axes, hammers) and ranged weapons (crossbows, bows), as well as offensive and defensive magic.

Character progression

As you progress, you will gain experience points and advance to the next level, gradually increasing your combat potential with the help of trainers scattered throughout the game world. As well as combat-related skills, the nameless protagonist has other abilities – he can learn to sneak behind enemies’ backs, craft useful equipment and open locks, for example. Technical issues

Compared to the original, Gothic features a completely refreshed graphic design, thanks to the use of Unreal Engine 4 technology. The mining valley is covered in lush vegetation, and the protagonist’s equipment is designed with great attention to detail. In addition, the plot is presented through cinematic interludes using motion capture technology.
