S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl is a hybrid of FPS, immersive sim and survival horror, and at the same time a full-fledged second instalment in the series that began in 2007 with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The combination of an interesting storyline and excellent, if very challenging, gameplay brought financial success to the creators of the original. STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl free download.

The title has seen two standalone expansions (prequels and sequels to the events of the original game) – Clear Skies and Sense of Pripyat – and together they have sold more than 4 million copies. However, we had to wait a very long time for the official sequel. This time, GSC Game World Studio moved with the times, abandoning the exclusive release for personal computers and porting their work to ninth-generation consoles.

The plot of the game

The plot of STALKER 2 once again takes players into the dark areas of the Zona – the vast area surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, whose accident in 1986 resulted in one of the biggest environmental disasters in history. However, the Ukrainian studio has decided to tweak the true look of the awe-inspiring and fascinating Zone, enriching its territory with warring factions, murderous mutants and deadly anomalies.

The roots of these changes can be traced back to Arkady and Boris Strugatsky’s acclaimed novel Picnic on the Edge of the Road, as well as its unofficial film adaptation – Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker.

In the game, we play the role of a hero called Skif. After another explosion at the Chernobyl reactor in 2006, a powerful energy source has appeared in the centre of Zona. The protagonist decides to cross the Zone and, as a lone stalker, uncover the secret of this mysterious energy. How this expedition will affect him depends on our actions. This is because the story has a non-linear structure, and the difficult choices we make during the game will affect its course and outcome.

It is worth mentioning that the plot of the second STALKER is not directly related to the story presented in the previous games under this banner.

Game Mechanics

In STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is played from a first-person perspective (FPP). The authors have provided us with an open world that is one of the largest maps in the history of videogames. It includes both the dense wilderness surrounding the plant and cities (such as Pripyat and Chernobyl-2). As we explore it, we complete quests that advance the storyline, as well as a variety of missions and side activities.

The Zona is deadly, yet it gives the impression of a living ecosystem. The mutated lifeforms and hostile humans that inhabit it, as well as the omnipresent radiation and anomalies that bend the laws of physics, force Stalkers traversing it to be ever vigilant.

For this reason, it is often necessary to use both the more than 30 weapons (rifle, pistol, shotgun or one of the more futuristic tools of murder; each weapon can be upgraded or modified) as well as bolts and the so-called gilka (coined branch; one of the gadgets that helps to detect anomalies). As you progress, you will come across various artefacts, the rarest of which are hidden in the most dangerous places. One of them is Jelly, a blue substance that restores the protagonist’s exaggerated powers.

The A-Life 2.0 system is responsible for the realistic behaviour of the mutants and humans living there, thanks to which the Exclusion Zone is subject to constant changes, even those that the player cannot witness. STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl free download for PC.

Technical issues

Unlike previous games in the series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Chornobyl uses Unreal Engine 5 technology. This change was dictated not only by the decision to increase the number of hardware platforms, but also by the technical problems often caused by the resource-intensive and buggy X-Ray engine. The title boasts high quality visuals and uses modern solutions, most notably ray tracing.
