The plot of the game

Millenia allows us to be at the head of the people we lead over a period of 10,000 years, from the beginnings of civilisation to its various futuristic variants. It is up to us to decide how our people’s destiny will turn out, how they will deal with various crises, and when and how (if at all) they will achieve victory over the others.

Game mechanics

Millenia takes a bird’s eye view of the action. The gameplay takes place in turn-based mode over 10 eras, corresponding to 10 thousand years of human history. We start the game modestly, with a handful of people gathering basic resources and constructing the first buildings. As time goes by, we begin to grow, producing increasingly diverse and specialised products, carrying out scientific research, producing new technologies, and eventually gaining access to new buildings and various improvements. By perfecting our defences, we will begin to recruit more advanced military units; by mastering iron smelting, we will gain access to advanced tools or weapons; and by forming guilds, we will gain access to specialised products such as wine.

Different development paths

The game also allows us to choose the characteristics of our nation and its leader; it’s up to us whether we want to lead a people of warriors into battle, or whether we want to make great geographical, scientific and technological discoveries. If we choose the path of conquest, we will find ourselves in automated skirmishes where the outcome of the battle is determined by the strength of the units involved. On the map, our army is symbolised by pawns, which can be divided and placed on the board according to individual preferences.

Adapting the action to the terrain

Whichever way we choose, more and more territories will come under our control, and we will be able to decide on their specialisation; territories rich in iron can be used for the production of weapons or tools, those covered in forests for the production of paper, while gold-rich territories can be used for smelting coins or jewellery. It’s a good idea to sell the surplus of manufactured goods so that we can use the money to develop our nascent empire.

Historical and alternative eras

As we progress, the game allows us to enter new eras. In addition to the epochs known from the pages of history, there are a number of alternative epochs waiting to be explored, presenting other variants of history, governed by their own laws, available technologies and units. At the same time, our actions can plunge the world into one of the Crisis Epochs; however, the prevailing disorder, caused by war or disease, will be used to the advantage of skilled strategists and shrewd leaders. This is important because the country that manages to dominate the others will dictate the terms of victory here. While there is nothing stopping you from fighting to the end, the Era of Victory, you can win much earlier if you make the right decisions along the way.
