Frostpunk 2 is a real-time strategy game from Polish studio 11 bit studios, responsible for the well-received This War of Mine. The title is a sequel to the 2018 game Frostpunk. The plot of the game

The game takes place in 1917, thirty years after the end of the first game. The world has been covered in ice due to an unexplained climate catastrophe, forcing humanity to fight for survival. The few survivors have built cities and settlements around generators, huge structures that burn coal and produce heat. One of these cities was New London, a habitat that managed to survive resource shortages, human conflict and the cataclysm known as the Great Storm.

After three decades, New London is a thriving city. Unfortunately, the inhabitants are facing a new problem. The resource they have relied on for years – coal – is no longer enough to heat the entire city. Hope lies in underground oil reserves, which settlers are beginning to exploit. People’s uncertainty about the oil’s potential, frequent crime, nomads camped on the outskirts of the city and the coming cold snaps are causing social unrest and distrust of authority. Our task is to alleviate this harsh situation, ensure the safety of the city’s inhabitants and prevent angry citizens from overthrowing our government.

Game mechanics

In terms of gameplay, Frostpunk 2 is an evolution of the original. The core gameplay remains the same. The title is a real-time strategy game in which we expand the city and take care of the needs of the citizens. Coal has been replaced by oil, the extraction of which is our top priority. When it runs out, the generator in the centre of the city shuts down and the citizens have no protection from the cold. The player must build mining outposts, buildings to produce food, hospitals to treat the sick and houses to rest in after a hard day’s work.

Frostpunk 2, like its predecessor, places great emphasis on difficult moral choices. More than once we will have to compromise our morals in the name of survival. The player must find a balance between pragmatism and idealism or face the collapse of the city or his rule. Our decisions have consequences and affect the fate of the city. Throughout the game we interact with many factions whose agendas are mutually exclusive. Depending on which faction we support, the game plays out differently.

Technical issues

The audiovisual environment makes a positive impression. The graphic style is dark and serious, with a predominance of white and grey tones. The buildings are inspired by authentic buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Piotr Musiał, known for the first part of Frostpunk, This War of Mine and the Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3, is once again responsible for the soundtrack.
