Battlefield 6 sees the well-known brand return after a four-year absence. Even before the official unveiling of the latest instalment, Electronic Arts hailed the game as the most ambitious in the series’ history. But how true is that? When is Battlefield 6 coming out?
EA has officially confirmed that BF6 will be released on 10 October 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This will be the first instalment in the series since Battlefield 2042, which was released on 19 November 2021.
As usual, EA DICE is responsible for production, with teams such as EA Motive (story campaign), Criterion Games (the Need for Speed and Burnout series) and Ripple Effect assisting in the development of Battlefield 6. However, it is worth noting that, following the disappointing release of Battlefield 2042, Vince Zampella — founder of Respawn Entertainment, which developed Titanfall 2 and the Star Wars Jedi series — took over the reins of BF6.
What’s new in Battlefield 6? Some old, some new!
Battlefield 6 marks a return to the present day, evoking memories of the series’ finest instalments: BF2, BF3 and BF4. Check out some of the new features that BF6 will offer:
- The game is being developed using a new version of the proprietary Frostbite engine.
- Contemporary setting.
- Maps will support a maximum of 64 players (rather than 128 in BF2042).
- The traditional class system is also returning.
- The return of the single-player story campaign.
- There is an expanded and more detailed environment destruction system.
- A kinesthetic combat system offering greater soldier mobility, including sliding while sprinting, running while crouching, dragging wounded soldiers across the battlefield and resting weapons against environmental elements.
- More dynamic close combat (something between the BF and CoD series?).
- The shooting and character movement systems have been rebuilt (you will have a better feel for each weapon and its balance, and the aiming and controls have been improved).

Game modes in Battlefield 6
The new instalment of the Battlefield series will be playable in various modes – eight in total, plus an additional Portal mode. Some familiar and beloved modes will return, but there will also be some new additions. Here they are:
- Conquest: the essence of Battlefield, with one large battlefield and all kinds of vehicles.
- Domination is a similar mode to Conquest, but on a smaller scale and without vehicles.
- Rush is an intense mode focused on infantry combat, where the objective is to destroy specific points on the map with explosives.
- Breakthrough is similar to Rush, except that all points must be captured simultaneously.
- Squad Deathmatch: fast-paced gameplay for teams of four in which the aim is to eliminate as many opponents as possible.
- Team Deathmatch is a team variation of Deathmatch, in which two sides fight to get the highest number of frags.
- King of the Hill is a fierce battle for a single point on the map that changes dynamically.
- Escalation is a new feature in the series where you capture and hold specific control points on the map, ultimately fighting one big battle in one place.
- In Portal, you play on community servers with modified gameplay rules. For the first time, it will include a map editor!
Although this has not been officially confirmed by EA, a Battle Royale mode is also likely to be available after launch. It is said that Ripple Effect studio is working on it.
Maps in Battlefield 6. How many will there be at launch?
The game will initially offer nine maps set in five different regions:
- Empire State – New York
- Manhattan Bridge – New York
- Siege of Cairo – Egypt
- New Sobek City – Egypt
- Iberian Offensive – Gibraltar
- District of Saints – Gibraltar
- Summit of Liberation, Tajikistan
- Mirak Valley – Tajikistan
- Operation Firestorm – Iran (a refreshed version of the BF3 map).
After the release, players will have access to additional maps. Leaks have mentioned 15 maps in total, including two new ones and three from previous instalments: Propaganda from the BF4 expansion, Talah Bazaar from the BF3 expansion and Downtown from BF Hardline.
Classes in Battlefield 6
EA DICE has returned to the class system that it abandoned in the less successful Battlefield 2042. The game will feature the series’ typical classes:
- Assault: The most mobile class in the game, ideal for infantry combat, equipped with two main weapons.
- The Engineer class is a vehicle class equipped with rockets and mines. Tank, helicopter and jet pilots should fear this class the most.
- Recon is, in other words, a sniper. It is equipped with a drone that reveals the enemy’s position, C4 for destroying vehicles and buildings, and a laser marker.
- Support heals during combat and distributes ammunition. They can also set up a portable shield and intercept enemy grenades and rockets.
Classes can be customised in terms of weaponry so that players’ choices are not limited by class. However, each class has its own unique gadgets and features that provide specific bonuses.
What is worth knowing about the return of the story campaign in Battlefield 6?
Although the Battlefield series was originally designed for online battles, the new instalment will feature a single-player story campaign, returning after a hiatus. What will it include? Consisting of nine missions, including a prologue, it will take players to locations such as Gibraltar, Cairo, Tajikistan and Brooklyn, New York.
The game is set in the not-too-distant future of 2027. The world is on the brink of collapse and the threat of global conflict is greater than ever. Players will take on the role of an elite squad of Marine Raiders, tasked with preventing this crisis. The story explores the conflict between NATO and Pax Armata, a private military corporation funded by former NATO members.
The campaign will probably be a similar length to previous instalments, taking a maximum of 5–6 hours to complete. Details are still shrouded in secrecy, but we will find out more closer to the release date. Bring on October!
