The plot of the game

Black Myth: WuKong takes place in a dark fantasy world inspired by the mythology of the Middle Kingdom. In turn, the story presented in the game is based on the classic 16th century novel Journey to the West, written by Wu Cheng’en. The player takes on the role of the titular Chosen One – the Monkey King – who embarks on a perilous journey to discover the truth behind the great legend.

Game mechanics

Although Black Myth: WuKong’s gameplay seems to draw on the Soulslike subgenre, it is simply a challenging action game. Nevertheless, its essential element is the challenging battles against a variety of ingeniously designed bosses. Getting to them, as well as exploring successive interconnected locations – the world is not completely open – is made difficult by ‘normal’ enemies and minibosses. Many of the enemies resemble characters and creatures from Chinese mythology and Journey to the West.

In combat, the Monkey King uses a staff and gradually learns more advanced techniques for wielding it. The protagonist also learns magic, including powerful spells and transforming into animals or insects. These skills increase the player’s chances in battle, and sometimes allow them to avoid it altogether.

Developing the hero

However, this is not always possible, so it is necessary to increase the level of the protagonist using the experience points gained from defeating enemies. In this way, and by exploring the world, we can obtain better and better equipment, which can tip the scales in our favour in many encounters.

Enemies, as well as characters who are peaceful to the protagonist, are the source of stories full of love, hate, greed and anger. We get to know them by completing related sequences of tasks. In the process, we also discover the motives behind each persona.

Technical issues

Black Myth: WuKong has been developed using Unreal Engine 5, a technology developed by Epic Games. It offers only a single-player mode, i.e. a story campaign. Black Myth: Wukong download free for PC.

Trivia

The mythological Sun Wukong, the character on which the game’s protagonist was based, was also the inspiration for Japanese mangaka Akira Toriyama when he created the first chapters of the Dragon Ball series and its main character, Son Goku.
