CRPG games can be loved or hated…. Nonsense! Everyone loves them! They are incarnation games – as the Polish Game Research Society formulates their name – or endless games – as some gamers jokingly say – daring to do what other productions do not. It’s a genre particularly focused on story, even without a linear narrative. It is a genre in which the bond between the player and the character he controls is the strongest.
Although there are opinions that computer games are a response to the crisis of the grand narratives of cinema and television, they are actually building their own worlds, which are already functioning permanently in the social circulation of culture. Their role is thus enormous, with successive hits reaching millions of gamers around the world. The audience is growing. Games along with it.
This is not a ranking of games! PC RPG games can’t simply be arranged from worst to best. Nothing of the sort. We won’t even attempt such a heresy! Each of the great erpegs, each of the cult productions has its own fans, its own advantages and disadvantages. It is not for us to judge here. Our job, however, is to call them out. You need to know about them! It’s an electric jolt of inspiration. A ball of fire from which sparks of cultism fly. We will try to present the best RPG games for PC in this one text. Mind you, we won’t succeed anyway! Why? We just don’t want to write so much (hehe). This is a topic for a book, and we are in the category description. This description is meant to inspire you to play. This is the task we set ourselves. All we ask is that you take a moment to pay attention!
What are RPGs? What is it actually? In a nutshell, they are games in which you take on the role of another character. But not to make it too easy (this definition pretty much covers all the games available on the market), this character has to advance in the course of some adventure, gain experience, upgrade equipment and so on. The keyword – development. What is the abbreviation for cRPG? It is simply a computer role-playing game. And what is a jRPG? It’s simply Japanese role-playing games. A cliché.
Let’s move on to examples then and get it over with. Brilliant. Polish. Record-breaking. Yes, we’re talking about The Witcher 3: Wild Gon. The child of the CD Projekt Red studio has really cornered the entire market, and no wonder. A huge, magical world where bloodthirsty monsters, ghouls, demons and other utopians prowl. On top of that, there’s a really great plot, medieval atmosphere and a familiar character from the earlier parts (and from the books!). Although the creator of Geralt (Andrzej Sapkowski) is not fond of the games, he never took away from their success. Whoever hasn’t played yet is a trumpet!
Breaking away from Earth for a moment (yes, with a capital letter, because we’re flying into space!), it’s impossible not to cite the galactic epic. Mass Effect from EA is a complete work. The great trilogy + the new Andromeda, which will forever be on the horizon, as the magnum opus of Bioware studio. Anyone who hasn’t yet experienced all those planets, alien invasions and great dialogues needs to catch up on it all. It’s hundreds of hours of GENIAL fun!
While we’re at giants, we need to continue this thread. The Elder Scrolls. Ok, we’ve got it behind us. We can move on. But, eek! That’s not the way to go… This moloch from Bethesda has already lived to see 5 parts, and it doesn’t stop there, of course. Don’t know what it’s all about? Maybe the subtitles will refresh your memory. Skyrim? Oblivion? Morrowind? The Elder Scrolls Online? Each installment is a bigger success, and the dark fantasy atmosphere until it pours out of these productions. Yes, they’re a bit stiff, but because of their momentum, you can forgive them for that. It’s an open world like never before. Extensive gameplay mechanics, character development, trading and everything else. TES is just plain cool!
Let’s move a bit back in time to the games that squeeze tears from players’ eyes whenever they hear about them. The magic words: Baldur’s Gate. Yes, the magnificent RPG in the Dungeons & Dragons universe carved a path for the entire genre. Of course, it was not the first, but still, respect! Part 3 is in production, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed! Another example? Diablo and Diablo II. Although they are more hack’n’slash games, RPG elements are bubbling up in them. Blizzard created something wonderful, and Diablo still dreams at night for many loot-collecting enthusiasts.
So much of this enumeration has gone on, and we still haven’t mentioned the classic, which in the country on the Vistula has a special place in everyone’s heart. Gothic is for many the first encounter with an RPG. Very brutal, dark, difficult and challenging. And it’s a wonder that gamers have not bounced back from this title…. Apparently, a dozen years ago they were more fierce. And good thing too, because Gothic really deserves attention! Did you know that fans are creating a remake? No, well you already know!
There are still many items missing from our list of RPG games. Some of them are classics of the rpg genre, others are hybrids. Some focus on the plot, others on gameplay mechanics. Each, however, is worth your attention. Leave poor Geralt of Rivia behind already and give someone else a chance! Third-person perspective and HIGH difficulty levels are From Software studio’s specialty. These cossacks from Japan created Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Elden Ring. Do they need further introduction? Their games defined a new genre – soulslike. They are some of the darkest and most difficult games on the market. Nevertheless, they attract millions of players!
After all, the fantasy climate may not interest everyone. Let’s get ourselves a time machine and move to the year 2077 – is something dawning already? Cyberpunk 2077 is a dystopian version of the future, in which large corporations rule the world. Sounds like the present…. It’s the perfect testbed for a game developed by Poland’s CD Projekt Red. The creators of Wieśek encountered many problems at its release, but the production as such managed. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with its storyline, side missions and character development mechanics. It will dent your seat! A different climate from fantasy is also offered by a classic over classics – Fallout. The post-nuclear apocalypse USA is full of mutants and hostile robots. The series lived to see several installments and still has a slew of fans around the world. It’s a shame not to try it out!
