RTS (real-time strategy) games – are strategy games without a turn-based system. The best examples are Warcraft III, Starcraft II, Dawn of War or Command & Conquer Generals. You build bases, move troops, and everything happens simultaneously on the screen. Although the genre was once a thing of the past, it is now making a comeback in the form of Age of Empires IV, for example. The RTS layer is also being woven into turn-based strategies. Today, the visuals of these games are breathtaking!
Grand Strategy Games – are grand strategy games that allow the player to manage entire nations in a turn-based system. They include diplomacy, trade, war and other systems. The Paradox Interactive studio specializes in this genre. It is thanks to them that such series as Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Crusader Kings or Space Stellaris were created.
4X games – the acronym stands for Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate. These are the next great strategies, but focused on different aspects and certainly simpler and more accessible. You probably know their representative. It’s old-fashioned Civilization. In addition, it is worth mentioning, for example, Humankind, Age of Wonders or Endless Legend.
Tactical games – are peculiar strategies focused on smaller skirmishes, often having an RPG layer. They usually have a turn-based system, but not always. They include such series as XCOM or Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun.
Economic Games – Economic strategies are quieter titles that focus on planning, business and development. Here we build cities, amusement parks, etc. Examples of such games are Anno 1800 or games from Frontier Developments, namely Planet Zoo, Planet Coaster and Jurassic World: Evolution.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the most popular strategy game at the moment is Total War, especially the parts dedicated to the Warhammer universe. Creative Assembly has slowly built up the strength of the brand and today Total War is in excellent condition. On the one hand, it offers historical simulations from different eras, and on the other, epic and huge battles in a fantastic world. Each faction is different and we can manage each of them. The campaign is turn-based on a huge map and the battles are played in real time. We are at the head of the army and use all the bonuses from the campaign mode. This duality is a great mechanic that has driven the success of the game. Warhammer has never been more popular!
But Total War is not all. The sixth installment in the Civilization series, Civilization VI, is a masterpiece of 4X strategy. The enormous amount of expansions has made the game popular even today. It is not afraid of new developments and is clearly better than its predecessors. It must also be said that the Warhammer 40,000 universe is experiencing a second youth thanks to several games. Gladius, Battlesector or Mechanicus are decent titles for fans of the cosmic “Warhammer”.
Many gamers, on the other hand, love old cult games. And you have to admit that there are some of them. The list could not miss Blizzard games – Warcraft and Starcraft. Age of Empires, The Settlers, Stronghold, Command & Conquer are also worth mentioning. There are many more! It’s a waste of time to list them all. However, new ones are popping up all the time – Starship Troopers: Terran Command or Victoria 3. Strategies will still conquer the world!
