EA Sports FC 26 is gearing up to announce the start of the new season. The next instalment of the iconic football series will introduce several changes to gameplay. This article provides a description of the most important changes and includes a link to download EA Sports FC 26 for free.

When is the release date for EA FC 26?

Fortunately, EA Sports is not keeping us waiting long for the new instalment of virtual football. The standard edition will be available on 26 September 2025, before the league games begin.

Those who can’t wait for the official kick-off will get an extra week’s head start. From 19 September, owners of the Ultimate Edition and EA Play subscribers will be able to take to the virtual pitch as part of a limited trial, where they can play their first matches, check out the updated gameplay, and start building their Ultimate Team squads.

However, you can download EA Sports FC 26 right now, completely free of charge, and get ahead of everyone else!

Which platforms will EA FC 26 be released on?

EA Sports FC 26 will be available on a wide range of platforms, including both current and older systems:

  • PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4,
  • Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
  • PC,
  • Nintendo Switch (first generation) and Nintendo Switch 2,
  • Amazon Luna (cloud version).

The full package of new features will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC: extensive HyperMotion V animations, improved ball and player physics, detailed stadium models and the most advanced graphics effects. All game modes will be included in these versions, including Clubs, Ultimate Team with a full set of social features, and the most comprehensive manager and player career modes.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions will be based on the previous-generation engine and will not feature HyperMotion V. They will also have less detailed graphics and simplified physics. While the modes will remain mostly the same, the animations and visuals will be less impressive.

EA promises that the Nintendo Switch 2 experience will be similar to that of the current generation of consoles, offering full content, new graphics and support for all modes. Meanwhile, the original Switch console will once again receive a hybrid edition with limited details and missing effects, as well as lacking the latest animation technologies. However, it will still offer full access to the main game modes.

The cloud version on Amazon Luna will be technically identical to the PS5/Xbox Series/PC editions, although its quality will depend on internet connection bandwidth and stability.

New features and gameplay changes

In EA Sports FC 26, the gameplay changes are a direct result of player feedback – EA is advertising the new edition with the slogan ‘Gameplay powered by community feedback’ for good reason. Most of the improvements have been made to the fundamentals, such as dribbling, AI, physics and goalkeeping.

Better ball control and dribbling

The Dynamic Dribbling system shortens the intervals between touches, improves dribbling animations, and enables faster reactions to opponent movements. Players behave more naturally: turns are smoother, defenders react faster to feints and the differences in agility between short and tall players have been balanced. The result? Dribbling is now more responsive, allowing for subtle changes of direction that realistically increase your chances of getting past an opponent.

Smarter AI and improved physics

Players now position themselves better on the pitch, support their teammates more effectively and react to the unfolding action. Defenders play more responsibly and full-backs are more willing to attack if they have space. Accidental ball deflections have been reduced, so a successful tackle is more likely to result in interception. Physical clashes have been enhanced with new animations for pushing and shielding the ball, making player positioning more realistic, including in the air.

Goalkeepers have new animations

They are more likely to deflect the ball to the side or over the goal than at the feet of the attacker. Their positioning and aggressiveness in one-on-one situations has improved. Despite a noticeable improvement in the number of ‘accidental’ rebounds in the test version, there are still passive reactions and unusual animations – EA has announced that they will continue to work on the goalkeeper AI until the release date.

Changes to shots and offence

Low driven shots are back, performed by double-pressing the shoot button. These have completely replaced the Timed Finishing mechanic. While these shots look impressive, players have noted that the game’s meta still favours powerful shots under the crossbar, with which goalkeepers have much more difficulty.

Two gameplay profiles

A new feature is the ability to choose between two gameplay profiles:

FeatureCompetitive GameplayAuthentic Gameplay
Game paceFaster, focused on dynamic actionSlower, more tactical
ResponsivenessHigher, movements and passes performed fasterNatural, consistent with the pace of the simulation
Player fatigueLimited – players do not weaken significantly at the end of the gameRealistic – fitness declines gradually, noticeable changes at the end of the match
Passing and receiving accuracyMore precise passing and receiving, fewer random lossesGreater role of random factors and opponent pressure
ApplicationOnline modes: Ultimate Team, Clubs, H2H matchesOffline modes: Career, friendly matches
Gameplay experienceDynamic, arcade-style e-sport competition Simulation closer to real football

This division has enabled a better balance to be achieved in the game modes: online play is faster and more arcade-style, while offline play focuses on patient, tactical gameplay.

New PlayStyles+ and Player Roles

The system of special player attributes (PlayStyles) has been expanded with new variations and the introduction of roles. These influence a player’s behaviour on the pitch: for instance, a Box-to-Box midfielder moves the ball more smoothly, while a Wide Winger performs better in one-on-one situations.

Engine and graphics

The game still runs on the Frostbite engine and there has been no revolution in graphics. The PC hardware requirements are the same as for FC 25, and initial materials suggest a similar level of detail.

However, there are smoother animations and better rendering of turf and kits, and improved ray tracing lighting effects may appear on next-generation consoles. The most significant changes, however, concern the gameplay mechanics themselves rather than the appearance.

Here is a comparison of the most important elements of FC 26 and its direct predecessor, FC 25:

Gameplay elementEA Sports FC 25EA Sports FC 26
DribblingStandard animations, sometimes ‘stiff’ during longer movementsDynamic Dribbling – faster reactions, shorter intervals between touches, greater fluidity
AI and player positioningCorrect, but there were gaps in defence and passive behaviourBetter support in attack and defence, defenders play more responsibly, full-backs actively join in the offensive
Physics of collisionsLimited pushing animations, simple ball shieldingNew pushing and shielding animations, more realistic body play, ability to knock opponents off balance in the air
GoalkeepersOften deflected the ball to the attacker’s feet, passive reactions at timesNew save animations, more frequent deflections to the side or over the goal, better positioning in 1-on-1 situations
ShotsCurrent ‘Timed Finishing’, low shots were not the default optionReturn of ‘low driven shot’ (double press to shoot), ‘Timed Finishing’ completely removed
Game modesUniform game pace online and offline, no dedicated presetsTwo presets: Competitive (online – fast pace) and Authentic (offline – slower, tactical pace)
PlayStylesIntroduction of PlayStyles features in FC 24, developed in FC 25New PlayStyles+ and Player Roles – affect AI behaviour and player characteristics
Engine and graphicsFrostbite, high-quality models, no major changes compared to FC 24 and 25Frostbite with improved animations, better turf and kits; no visual revolution

Game modes and new content in EA FC 26

EA Sports FC 26 introduces significant new features and changes to virtually every major game mode.

FC 26 Career Mode – player and manager

This year’s Career Mode focuses on greater immersion and dynamic challenges. The most notable new feature is Live Manager Challenges, which are special scenarios based on real events or ‘what if’ situations.

These can be short episodes (a few minutes of a match, such as turning the tide of a game), or longer stories spanning several seasons. For instance, you could take over a team in crisis and try to keep them in the league, or guide a newcomer to victory in the cup. Completing challenges earns rewards ranging from Season Points and cosmetic items to Icon and Hero cards that can be used in other modes.

Another significant new feature in the manager’s career is the dynamic manager market. Artificial intelligence can now change the coaches at other clubs – rivals can hire new coaches and modify their tactics, playing style and formation. This means that the league may look different from season to season and that subsequent competitions will be less predictable.

The Archetypes system has been introduced in player career mode. Players can choose from several archetypes, such as ‘Maestro’ or ‘Virtuoso’, and develop them by earning experience points. This unlocks unique skills and enables players to customise their playing style to better suit their preferences.

Ultimate Team is a feature of EA Sports FC 26

The biggest new feature is FUT Tournaments, which are classic online cup competitions. Players compete in a four-stage tournament ladder, where the loser is eliminated and the winner advances: round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. This format is familiar to fans of older instalments of the series and has been eagerly awaited by the community.

The second pillar is live events: seasonal activities with unique themes, rules, and rewards. These events may require players to build a squad from a specific league, nationality or card level and sometimes introduce special modes (e.g. Mystery Ball). Another new feature is the Event Hub, which allows you to check the rules, rewards and progress towards goals all in one place without having to click through complex menus.

The PlayOff phase has been removed from the FUT Championship; qualification now takes place directly by reaching the appropriate division in Rivals, for example.

‘Champions Challengers’ has also been added: a weekend league for players who did not make it to the main WL. This provides an opportunity to win smaller prizes and gradually improve your game.

Division Rivals now features a Bounties system, which provides special weekly challenges that offer extra rewards or accelerate your ranking points.

Additionally, the game now features an FC Pro tab, which is the official qualification module for e-sports competitions. FC Pro Open Ladder mode enables all players to compete in rankings that lead to regional and international tournament qualifiers.

Clubs in EA FC 26

The Clubs mode (formerly Pro Clubs) has undergone the biggest changes in years. These changes are intended to breathe new life into team play and make it easier for players on different platforms to play together.

The most notable new feature is full cross-play support for clubs on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, which means a shared player pool. Now, you can easily play in the same club as friends using other platforms — the restrictions from previous editions have been removed.

Similar to Ultimate Team, Live Events are coming to Clubs. These can alter the rules of the game, for example introducing 5v5 Rush tournaments, matches with no offside, special goal-scoring rules, or squad restrictions.

Rush mode (5v5 football with goalkeepers) has been integrated into Clubs and will be one of the main game modes during seasonal events.

The goalkeeper position has also been improved in Clubs. A new camera system has been added and the goalkeeper’s control and positioning have been enhanced. Full control of the goalkeeper in Rush 5v5 mode is now possible, whereas before it was unavailable.

The season and league system remains in ‘Clubs’, but has been supplemented with additional goals, cosmetic rewards and personalisation. Additionally, Drop-in mode (quick matches with random players) supports cross-play, significantly reducing waiting times for matches.
