Elden Ring is another entry in the portfolio of FromSoftware, the studio that, with 2009’s Demon’s Souls, started a trend known as “soulslike” – inaccessible action-RPGs characterised by a high level of difficulty from the first few minutes of play. As with the development of the developer’s other flagship games – with the exception of Dark Souls II – the role of chief designer was played by Hidetaka Miyazaki. Elden Ring free download.

The game’s plot

Following the pattern of games in the series commonly referred to as Soulsborne – which includes Demon’s Souls, the Dark Souls trilogy and Bloodborne – Elden Ring’s main storyline is lightly sketched out, and the player must progress through the stages of the adventure to piece together bits of information that will eventually form a coherent whole.

The production takes place in a land known as The Lands Between, which is divided into six kingdoms. Each is ruled by one of the demigods that we must defeat in order to reclaim the fragments of the Elden Circle. It was the shattering of this mysterious object that triggered the cataclysm that brought the Lands Between to the brink of collapse. The main character, one of the Damaged, returned home from exile to try to regain the once-lost favour of the Golden Earthtree, prove his worth and become the new Elden Lord.

To create the story of the Elden Ring world, FromSoftware enlisted the help of George R.R. Martin – an author best known for the book-length saga A Song of Ice and Fire, on which HBO’s Game of Thrones is based. His work was modified to some extent by the game’s authors, resulting in a complex, dark fantasy world.

Game mechanics

At the start of the adventure, you create your own protagonist, choosing their gender and appearance, as well as one of ten character classes (Vagabond, Warrior, Astrologer, Hero, Bandit, Prophet, Samurai, Prisoner, Confessor, Rogue). At the same time, it only affects the initial statistics and equipment of our rogue. Indeed, Elden Ring places great emphasis on role-playing elements, offering players freedom in character development, which, combined with a wide arsenal of weapons and spells, makes it possible to adapt the appropriate tactics to each situation.

One of the main attractions of the title is the complex arcade combat system. Clashes with enemies take place in a dynamic manner and each attack is very precise. FromSoftware is famous for creating challenging productions, and Elden Ring is no exception – each duel should be treated with caution, while the variety of enemies requires us to constantly invent new tactics.

Boss battles

An important element of the game are the encounters with powerful bosses. In total, there are one hundred and twenty-nine of them in the game. In Elden Ring, the developers have made sure that each of these battles is thrilling and that the player is ruthlessly held accountable for their mistakes. As in the Soulsborne series, the design of each boss is thoughtful and unique, and an aura of divinity and heroism has been created around the main antagonists – due to the plot of the title.

A significant change from the studio’s previous games is the world building. This time, the available terrain is completely open, vast and filled with smaller locations with a more corridor-like structure. To move around more quickly, you can use a spectral mount, Struga (Torrent), which can be summoned at almost any time during the game. There is also nothing to stop you from throwing punches from his back and getting into fights with enemies.

Multiplayer mode

As well as solo play, there is also the option to summon other players into our world to take on enemies in a co-operative mode. As in Dark Souls, it is possible to link up with two other people at the same time, but the cooperation only lasts until the boss is killed. Elden Ring free download for PC.

Technical issues

Despite using the same engine as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Bloodborne, among others, Elden Ring takes full advantage of the latest technologies, such as HDR and 4K Ultra HD. The art style successfully reflects the darkness and harshness of the world it depicts, and its design makes up for any technical shortcomings with the quality of the textures or detailed models.
