The controls and match mechanics
The gameplay on the pitch offers several control styles tailored to different platforms and preferences. On consoles, you can play in the traditional way using a gamepad. However, the touch control option is also available on Switch and mobile devices, and mouse control is available on PC, reminiscent of the original Nintendo DS releases. Players draw lines to indicate the direction of runs, passes or shots, giving them tremendous control over tactics.
A key new feature is the ‘Focus’ system, which is activated when two players clash in a duel for the ball. The game then switches to a mode reminiscent of ‘rock, paper, scissors’, in which players must predict their opponent’s move (e.g. dribbling, dodging or sliding) and choose the appropriate counterattack. Success depends not only on the character’s stats, but also on the player’s intuition.
Another important mechanic is ‘Zone’ – a special area that appears on the pitch. Capturing it gives the team a temporary advantage, such as increasing the power of shots. These elements add a strategic layer to the matches, forcing you to think on your feet and adapt constantly. Passes and shots are intuitive, but their effectiveness depends on timing and player positioning, rewarding precision and good planning.
Team building and player development
As befits a true RPG, these are the foundations of success. In Victory Road, we have access to a database containing over 4,500 players, who can be recruited in various ways, such as through the story mode, Chronicle Mode, or special challenges.
Each player is characterised by statistics such as kicking, defence, speed and stamina, and has a unique set of special techniques. They also belong to one of four elements (Fire, Wood, Wind or Earth), creating a system of dependencies similar to that in the Pokémon series.
However, team management is not just about choosing the line-up. We can also set the formation freely, conduct intensive training to improve the characters’ statistics and equip players with special items, such as shoes that boost speed or gloves that strengthen the goalkeeper’s defence.
It is also important to maintain the morale and relationships between players, as this can lead to powerful combination techniques. This depth turns the process of creating the perfect team into an engaging game in itself, where every decision has a real impact on the outcome on the pitch. It is this blend of management and sports action that defines the strength of the series.
Hissatsu – spectacular special techniques!
What has always set the Inazuma Eleven series apart are the Hissatsu: fantastic special techniques that transform an ordinary football match into an epic, anime-style battle. In Victory Road, they make a stunning comeback with new, improved graphics. Each player can learn several of these techniques, both offensive and defensive, and using them consumes energy points (TP).
During a match, if the timing is right, we can activate Hissatsu to perform an impossible move. Want to take a shot that turns into a fiery phoenix? Use ‘Fire Tornado’. Need to stop a powerful attack from your opponent? “God Hand” will create a giant hand of pure energy to block the ball.
These techniques fall into four categories: shots, dribbles, blocks and goalkeeper saves. Some of them are powerful combination moves that require the cooperation of two or three players, such as the legendary ‘The Earth’. The key to defeating the toughest opponents is choosing the right Hissatsu for your team and managing your energy wisely during the match. It is these moments that define Inazuma Eleven, making the gameplay so exciting and unforgettable.
