The plot of the game
Lethal Company presents us with a seemingly optimistic vision of the future, where space colonisation has become a reality. However, over the years some celestial bodies have been abandoned by mankind, and the industrial complexes left on them yawn with emptiness. As the game progresses, we take on the role of scrappers working for the title company, whose mission is to collect valuable items from the abandoned moons. This is made more difficult by the fact that there are many dangers lurking and, to top it all off, you have to meet the exorbitant standards at all costs in order to survive.
Game mechanics
In Lethal Company, the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP). During gameplay, we travel through space in our own spaceship, landing on various moons to collect valuable items left on their surfaces. After landing, we can approach the task in one of two ways. Although there is nothing to stop us staying on the ship and limiting our role to staring at radars, monitoring the situation and coordinating the team’s actions, there is much more excitement in taking part in the search for scrap metal.
We collect scrap metal in industrial complexes overrun by a variety of equally terrifying creatures. Due to the constant threat, which increases after nightfall, we must be on our guard and act quickly to collect scrap metal and return to the ship as quickly as possible. If we manage to escape with our lives, we can use the money we earn to buy useful tools such as torches, shovels, walkie-talkies or stun grenades, as well as various cosmetic accessories for both our scrapper and the ship. The bravest can try scanning the creatures they encounter to build their own bestiary.
Survival is not a given
Survival is not easy, however, as we have very limited means of defence against the monsters. As if that weren’t enough, if we don’t meet the Company’s standards, we will be thrown into the void. In turn, after death, there is nothing left for us to do but start the fight all over again. To add to the fun, the locations are procedurally generated.
Game modes
Although Lethal Company can be played as a solo game, it also has a four-player cooperative mode. The game allows voice communication (which is affected by the distance between the players and the situation they are in), and the key to success is coordination with the other members of the team. Technical issues
The graphic design of Lethal Company has a retro comic style, reminiscent of the PlayStation 2 era.
