Pioneers of Pagonia is a colourful city-building game created by Volker Wertich, the experienced designer who launched the iconic The Settlers series in 1993. The production uses tried and tested solutions from classic strategies, while introducing a number of innovations. Plot of the game

Pagonia is an archipelago of islands scattered with villages that once belonged to one people. An unknown cataclysm separated them from each other, resulting in the formation of smaller tribes, forced to fight alone against raiders, aggressive fauna and mythical beasts. As the titular Pioneer, we will traverse successive lands, build a strong economy, participate in tribal rituals and help other islanders, eventually uniting them under one banner.

Despite the developers’ preparation of the world’s history, the production is devoid of a story campaign. Instead, Envision Entertainment has chosen to focus on a variety of challenges that will encourage players to return to the title.

Game mechanics

Our task in Pioneers of Pagonia is to lead a community to become an economic powerhouse. To achieve this goal, we will learn new technologies, construct more than 40 buildings and develop production chains for more than 70 goods. As we explore the world, we will discover new sources of resources, precious treasures and mysterious places full of magic. In the game, we will use both our management skills and our knowledge of the secret arts. By performing tasks for neighbouring villages, we will gain the trust of their inhabitants over time, forming alliances and establishing trade routes. This will require logistical solutions, including the creation of road networks or transport methods.

In Pioneers of Pagonia, we will not directly command the available combat formations. Our sub-commanders will await simple orders (such as patrolling, scouting or searching for enemies) in dedicated buildings. Different types of units will be more effective against certain types of enemy – for example, guards will easily deal with thieves, but mages will be more useful against ghosts. The developers of Pioneers of Pagonia have decided to increase the regressibility of the strategy by using procedurally generated maps, so that each battle will look a little different. The studio is also planning to introduce a co-op mode.
