Explore the new world of Arcadia and experience the new game mechanics

The action in The Outer Worlds 2 takes us from the familiar Halcyon colony to a brand new star system: Arcadia. This place only superficially resembles the earthly ideal. This new setting not only offers a fresh aesthetic, but also introduces a variety of new challenges, such as non-linear faction storylines and space-time anomalies that distort the fabric of reality. The world will be more geographically diverse, with distinct regions that will affect exploration, survival strategy and player decisions. Obsidian has ensured that each planet and corporate base has its own unique character, architectural style and set of threats.

Equally significant changes have been made to the gameplay itself. From the information available thus far, it seems that the developers have prioritised enhancing the combat system, which was criticised in the original game. Now, energy, chemical and experimental weapons boast new capabilities, and their effectiveness hinges on modifications and the player’s skills. Additionally, the Tactical Time Dilation system has been enhanced — rather than merely slowing down time, it now enables a more creative approach to combat. Obsidian promises that this combination of improved mechanics and narrative will form the basis of the sequel.

The faction and storyline system means that no choice is also a choice

Arcadia is not just a new environment; it is a political melting pot where the interests of several powerful factions collide. The two most important forces are the Protectorate, which is a quasi-utopian structure based on military control, and the Earth Directorate, which represents a more expansive and harsh philosophy of survival. Players must take sides in the conflict – or, as suggested in the trailers, try to follow an independent path, which may lead to even more complex consequences. In The Outer Worlds 2, moral decisions are not black and white, and the game deliberately avoids simplistic divisions between good and evil. Story choices are spread out over time and are linked to reputation, influencing the openness of NPCs, the availability of specific quests and the development of entire side stories.

Unlike many modern RPGs, where choices can be illusory, Obsidian focuses on real changes to the game world. Factions will react not only to decisions made in the main storyline, but also to micro-behaviours such as the way dialogue is conducted, the choice of weapons and the companions we travel with. As a result, The Outer Worlds 2 promises to be one of the most ambitious RPG projects in recent years — a game in which even inaction is a political act.

Six extraordinary companions

You won’t be alone on your galactic odyssey: the studio has created six unique NPCs, each representing different factions and ideologies in colonial space. Among them are Niles, a new recruit to the Earth Directorate, and Aza, a devotee of the enigmatic Rift cult.

The darker characters include Marisol, a professional assassin working for the Order of the Ascendants, and Tristen, a Protectorate judge. Each character will contribute unique combat skills and their own perspective on the conflicts consuming the colonial system.

Of the more than 90 character upgrades available, some are controversial, such as “Psychopath” and “Serial Killer”. These unusual perks reward players who enjoy a brutal playstyle and don’t hesitate to eliminate non-player characters (NPCs). It’s a bold move that highlights the dark humour typical of Obsidian’s work.

Game availability on different platforms

Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox Game Studios have officially confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 will be released on 29 October 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles. Notably, despite being under Microsoft’s wing, the developers have chosen to release the game simultaneously on Sony’s platform, potentially in an attempt to reach the widest possible RPG audience. Obsidian seems to be investing very consciously in the diversity of the player experience, regardless of whether they are using a Windows 11 gaming PC or the latest next-generation console.
