The first The Sims was released in 2000. It was created by Will Wright, the founder of Maxis and the creator of SimCity and other related Sim-themed games that were hugely successful in the 1990s. The Sims quickly surpassed the other games in the developer’s catalogue in popularity, becoming a phenomenon and one of the most popular brands in the electronic entertainment industry.

Game mechanics

The Sims 4 avoids revolutionary changes to the gameplay model. Throughout the game, the player takes care of the family of virtual Sims, looking after all their spiritual and material needs, providing a roof over their heads, designing a house and a garden.

All gameplay begins with the creation of your Sims. In The Sims 4, it was decided to redesign the character creation system. This time, the facial modification system has been expanded – the sliders that change a given element have been replaced by mouse movements, while increasing the range of changes. The ability to edit the entire silhouette of the character has also been added. On the other hand, the ability to freely customise hair and clothing colours has been removed, returning to the predefined sets provided by the creators.

Sim’s character matters

Sim’s character is also very important. Players choose some of the dozens of personality traits available, as well as the character’s long-term goals. These affect the character’s subsequent behaviour and are part of the game’s improved artificial intelligence system. As a result, Sims behave more naturally and react in a much more varied way to the situations around them. The emotions felt by the virtual heroes are also new. These are influenced not only by their current needs and social interactions, but also by the household items they use and the clothes they wear. Experiencing specific emotions will open up new dialogue options for us, among other things.

Build your dream home

Once the Sims have been created, the player must place them in the house. They can leave it as the developers have designed it, or completely redesign it. This is because the production offers a comprehensive tool that allows you to build and furnish your own homes. The builder interface has been improved compared to previous instalments. This includes the introduction of pre-designed rooms that can be built with a single click.

The Sims 4 also introduces the Gallery, which allows you to share your homes and characters with other players.

DLC and add-ons

Over the years, The Sims 4 has seen its fair share of extra content, ranging from micro-add-ons that introduce one or two new items and clothing packs (usually subtitled Accessories), to full-blown expansions that offer story campaigns, attractive new locations and significantly enhanced gameplay.
