When The Sims 4 was released in 2014, it was heavily criticised for its poor content, which was intended to allow for later add-ons. Fortunately, this issue was addressed, and the quality of virtually every major expansion pack, especially Cats & Dogs and Get to Work, was impressive.

The same cannot be said for the smaller packs, but the excellent ‘Vampires’ and ‘Get to Work’ still significantly influenced various elements of gameplay. Now, the long-awaited ‘Seasons’ expansion pack has arrived, and, as expected, it is one of the richest in terms of content. In fact, it’s surprising!

Choose your favourite season!

At first glance, there is the standard division into spring, summer, autumn and winter. Sometimes Sims have to dress warmly so they don’t get sick or freeze to death; at other times, they get caught in the rain and get soaked. Pulling out an umbrella makes them a tasty treat for lightning, which can result in serious problems or the acquisition of electrical powers!

Warmer days encourage relaxing in an inflatable pool, while a pile of raked leaves is an ideal spot for some alone time with your significant other. Each season has its pros and cons, and we can take a break from them in our own home – unless you don’t buy a thermostat.

Celebrate with your Sims!

Since we have seasons, we could also use some appropriate holidays. In spring, there’s Valentine’s Day, and in winter, there’s a family dinner with gifts and a New Year’s Eve party. Worried about the lack of Halloween? With the new calendar, you can plan your own holidays and events, and choose whether or not that day is a day off work!

You can choose to spend the day running naked, worshipping a random home decoration or fasting – just set the date and you’re done. The calendar also conveniently shows the weather forecast and our Sims’ activities for the coming days. What’s more, if the seasons change too quickly, there is a new tab in the game options where you can choose their length, and you can even turn off dangerous storms and blizzards.

Become a florist!

Fans of interior design will be pleased to hear that there is lots of new furniture, mainly decorations for specific holidays, as well as clothing with categories for high and low temperatures. In addition, the gardening section has been expanded to include new plants (including seasonal ones), and there is now a suitable profession for those who love getting their hands dirty.

On top of that, we can earn money by arranging flowers and selling bouquets, or we can prepare a surprise by adding a death flower, whose scent ages the recipient (and kills pensioners!). There’s something for fans of simulation and sadists alike – the best kind of Sims expansion!

The expansion affects existing locations

Although we don’t get a new world, the seasons affect all existing locations, so we don’t lose anything. Leaves change colour, rivers freeze (though not pools), and weather-appropriate attractions appear in public places, such as a summer bucket filled with water balloons.

It should be noted that this has been implemented sensibly: in the Desert Oasis of Health, for example, we won’t see green lawns or snow on the ground, both of which are so delightful in Willow Bay.

Among the other interesting new features, there is a ‘career’ for children in the form of scouting, where they can acquire skills (so that perfectionists have another goal to achieve). There is also beekeeping, where we can send a swarm of bees to a disliked Sim if they like us. There are also a lot of weather-related moodlets (this time without burns or strokes), and a few additional traits that can be purchased with aspiration points. There is also a playable scarecrow and an expanded garden gnome feature – now we can make offerings to them, but be careful not to anger them!

Seasons is one of the best expansions!

Ultimately, we get a huge package of content that affects virtually every element of the game. In fact, I would say that this is one of the best expansions for The Sims 4 yet, offering new features for fans of building and decorating homes, as well as for those interested in inter-Sim relationships.

The calendar itself and the ability to plan the coming weeks change things considerably. Holidays provide a welcome break from everyday Sim life, but it’s the changing weather that takes centre stage here, and we can really feel it, regardless of our play style.
