UBOAT for PC and Switch is a submarine simulator developed by the Warsaw-based team Deep Water Studio. The developer has partnered with PlayWay, the publisher of titles such as Helicopter: Natural Disasters, Farm Simulator 2015 or Car Mechanic Simulator 2015, and in May 2016 the two companies launched a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter. The plot of the game
The plot of the production is set during the Second World War. While playing UBOOT, the player assumes the role of a captain of a German submarine who, together with his crew, performs various missions on behalf of the Navy command. The title tries to stick to real events, although the fate of the sailors is solely in the hands of the player.
Game mechanics
UBOOT on PC and Switch is an unusual combination of mechanics straight out of Silent Hunter and Fallout Shelter. Commanding a ship is not only about maneuvering and firing torpedoes, but also about actively participating in the life of the crew, taking care of their needs, assigning them appropriate functions, etc.
Each sailor is an individual with a unique appearance, abilities, and problems that he can sometimes turn to his superior for help.
Taking care of sailors
Everyone reacts differently to our actions. This is because we need to maintain discipline on board, but if we are too strict, the mental state of the crew members will deteriorate. For example, one of the soldiers may attack his colleagues, and another may make a mistake and reveal himself as a spy.
In addition to all this, it is on our shoulders to take care of the physical needs of the crew, so you need to provide your men with food and rest. The well-being of the sailors is directly related to their willingness to fight, without which they are of little use.
Open World
While most of the gameplay takes place aboard a faithfully reproduced submarine, it should not be forgotten that UBOOT is a sandbox game, so it is up to us to decide where we go.
The freedom of the gameplay is also evident in the management of the crew itself, as we can deal with them completely freely, with some decisions of course having negative consequences.
Technical issues
UBOOT on PC and Switch is a three-dimensional production, but commanding sailors looks similar to Fallout Shelter – so the camera often shows us a vertical cross section of the ship. The submarine itself has been recreated very accurately, and during the game we can look at various parts such as ballast tanks, compressors, etc.
