Unknown 9: Awakening is an action-adventure game developed in collaboration between Reflector Entertainment Studio and Bandai Namco Entertainment. The production takes us on a journey to the original universe known as Storyworld, where humanity is trying to maintain a balance between transcendence and self-destruction. The plot of the game

The main character of Unknown 9: Awakening is Haroona, played by Anya Chalotra, known for her role as Yennefer in the Witcher series on the Netflix platform. As a girl growing up on the streets of Calcutta, India, she is haunted by visions of her own death. Under the guidance of a mentor, the protagonist learns to master her supernatural abilities to control the unseen and gains access to a hidden dimension known as the Fault, whose secrets she seeks to explore. Haroona’s abilities lead to her being kidnapped by the so-called Dominators, led by their founder, Vincent Lichter, who plan to use her to change the course of human history.

The story presented in Unknown 9: Awakening is only a fragment of the larger whole that is the Unknown 9 universe, set in the Storyworld. It consists of, among other things, the novel Unknown 9: Genesis by Layton Green, the podcast Unknown 9: Out of Sight and the comic Unknown 9: Torment. A community text game called Unknown 9: Chapters, developed by the Montreal-based Alice & Smith team, was also released prior to the release of the title.

Nine key books

Key to the world of Unknown 9 are nine books that contain the accumulated wisdom of all the civilisations that have ever walked the Earth, each of which reached an incredibly high level of development before self-destructing. To ensure that their knowledge was not lost, it was decided to write it down. Instead, the books were to be guarded by nine ageless (but not immortal, so that over the centuries many of them lived to see their successors) guardians, who would from then on secretly influence the fate of future generations and civilisations.

Game mechanics

Unknown 9: Awakening is played from a third-person perspective (TPP). The adventure takes us through a variety of locations – from the jungles of India, to the deserts of Mauritania, to Portugal full of Gothic architecture. In addition, the protagonist occasionally travels to the Fault, which is governed by different laws than the world she knows.

As Haroona traverses the locations and carries out the missions entrusted to her, she will have to face her enemies. On the battlefield, the protagonist makes use of her supernatural abilities, which allow her to manipulate people and objects, both to confront enemies in open combat and to operate silently. Among other things, the heroine can create an energy shield that protects her from attacks and generate a shockwave that knocks back enemies within range. In addition, Haroona has the ability to take control of a selected enemy’s body, allowing her to fight remaining enemies in their skin and with their weapons.
