When is WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers coming out?
The game is being developed by the Chinese studio Leenzee Games and will be published by 505 Games. WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers is scheduled for release on 24 July 2025. However, you can already download it for free from our website.
WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers will primarily be a single-player game – the developers have not created a co-op or PvP mode. They have focused on the single-player experience, placing the story and challenging exploration at the centre. Although a demo version has not yet been announced, it is possible that one will be released before the game’s launch.
Non-linear storyline
The game’s story is set in the fictional land of Shu, steeped in mysticism, local legends and folklore, during the late Ming dynasty. Thus, WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers also refers to historical facts and figures. Once powerful, Shu is now ravaged by internal factional struggles and a mysterious plague that deforms people physically and spiritually, gradually transforming them into aggressive monsters.
The main character, Wuchang, is also a carrier of the plague. In her case, the disease manifests itself through the growth of feathers on her body, internal transformation and supernatural abilities.
Wuchang gains powerful combat skills, but must also struggle with their dark effects. She also suffers from amnesia, and her past is shrouded in mystery. As the game progresses, we discover who she was, who she is becoming and the role she will play in a world on the brink of collapse.
WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers does not have a single, predetermined storyline. Instead, it provides a non-linear narrative structure in which the player must make choices that are reflected in the game world.
Gameplay
We follow Wuchang’s actions from behind her back. Inspired by soulslike games, the main focus is on precise hand-to-hand combat and building an atmosphere of horror. During duels, you can switch between two types of weapon in real time: light and fast or powerful and heavy. For example, you can switch between daggers and a halberd.
Combat requires rhythm, dodging, parrying and exploiting enemy weaknesses. There are 25 unique weapons, divided into five categories. Feather Transformation is also useful for defeating enemies, as it allows you to activate special, powerful attacks when the ‘plague’ level reaches a certain threshold. This mechanic is reminiscent of the transmutations in Bloodborne, but it is also linked to the story and the characters’ psychology.
Travel and explore the world!
Between battles, you can enjoy immersive exploration. The hand-designed locations include Gothic buildings, Buddhist temple ruins, gloomy forests and deserted towns.
The game world is full of hidden passages and secret items. Many interconnected areas can be explored in any order, allowing you to decide the order in which you take on the bosses, which affects the development of your character.
The creators of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers declare that players will be faced with morally ambiguous decisions that affect not only the course of the story, but the game world itself. The fate of Wuchang is not set in stone – how the story ends is up to you.
Audiovisual
Thanks to the use of Unreal Engine 5, the game boasts impressive visuals. The character models, animations and effects are particularly impressive during boss fights. The hand-designed locations are full of detail.
The audio was created by experienced Asian developers who used traditional Chinese instruments to create an atmosphere of horror and sadness. The protagonist’s voice and the dialogue of non-player characters are full of melancholy, which fits with the reflective tone of the story.
